“This was a really beneficial experience for our pupils, and I would highly recommend it to all schools”
Graeme and Rhona worked with our senior pupils to deliver workshops on the topics of diversity and gender stereotyping. The workshops provided a safe and open space for discussions around these topics and encouraged pupils to identify their personal experiences of these.
Pupils engaged enthusiastically and asked meaningful questions to deepen their understanding. Activities engaged the pupils and promoted individual and group discussions surrounding the topics. Pupils were empowered to discuss personal experiences and identify ways in which we could improve.
The workshops also contributed to our development as a rights-respecting school, promoting equality and awareness of diversity and gender stereotypes. This was a really beneficial experience for our pupils, and I would highly recommend it to all schools.

“Have already seen hugely positive changes”
One of the key aims of our school is to celebrate diversity and create a more inclusive curriculum. We have been using support and resources from TIE for just over a year now and have already seen hugely positive changes as a result.
All teaching staff in our school have undergone the Level 1 online training and Level 2 in person training. Both of these have given teachers more confidence in talking to pupils about the LGBT themes and how to implement these throughout the curriculum. They also gave us a huge bank of resources which we can use and adapt to suit our learners.
One resource which I have tried with my class is the Scots Poetry Collection, available on the lgbteducation.scot website. Each year we look at a range of Scottish poems and this year my Primary 6 class explored two of the poems in this collection. The two poems I used were ‘If Rachel Corsie Played For Us’ and ‘Zander Murray’s Wee Stepover’, both of which are about real life LGBT football players.
The lesson was primarily a literacy lesson, looking at various features and techniques with the poems. However in both cases the content naturally lead to discussions about the LGBT themes and the challenges around footballers and other sportspeople coming out as gay. I asked some open questions but the children lead the discussions and made some fantastic points about discrimination and gender stereotypes.
The resource itself is incredibly easy to use and adapt, there is a teacher’s guide which suggests different discussion points and lesson ideas. Each poem also contains comprehension style questions so can be used to cover a variety of reading skills. The poems are very colourful and attractive, making them appealing and interesting to the children. I would highly recommend this resource for any teacher studying Scottish poetry with their class.

“This has a positive impact on our whole school community”
I have been working in partnership with TIE for the past 2 years. I have had a unique experience as I have taken this forward as part of my remit whilst
working across 2 schools.
The Toolkit is easy to use and can be adapted depending on your school and context. There is always someone willing to help and advise from TIE! We have completed both modules [of the Delivering LGBT Inclusive Education CPD] and the second one is delivered in such an engaging way that our staff were completely on board and excited to get started.
Our quality assurance processes have shown that this has a positive impact on our whole school community. Our pupils were desperate to share their learning experience and have helped frame our next steps. We are looking forward to continuing our work with TIE as we continue our LGBT [Inclusive Education] journey.

“Always incredible, refreshing and highly valuable”
TIE have been instrumental in our school’s implementation of LGBT Inclusive Education and we couldn’t be more grateful. They have been there for us, every step of the way; supporting us with resources, books, staff training and no question or ask was too much for them. The toolkit has been such a useful resource, guiding us along the way and ensuring that we have always been on the right track with our implementation of the learning themes and our plans.
TIE’s inputs with our P5-7 learners are always engaging and exciting, with their CPD staff inputs always incredible refreshing and highly valuable. TIE also put together a training input specifically for our SFLW team which we were so grateful for.
The resources available on lgbteducation.scot are fantastic – not only are they wonderful and meaningful as they are, but they have also been excellent, high quality examples of high quality integration of LGBT learning themes. The resources have allowed for our staff to see how LGBT education can/should be integrated into their planning and teaching. Thanks to support from TIE and the helpful Toolkit, we have now incorporated all of the LGBT Inclusive Learning Themes into our planners from P1-7.
We are now confident that our learners are experiencing a good balance of windows and mirrors throughout their education here and that our LGBT learners and allies feel supported, included and safe here. We would not be where we are today without the team at TIE and their ongoing support. Thank you!
