Secondary Workshops

Our school services are designed to address prejudice and improve outcomes for all learners.

Our secondary school workshops are delivered by our Education Officers, who are GTCS-registered teachers.

Our data shows that our workshops have strong outcomes, with 96% of learners saying they understood how prejudice can affect LGBT people and 4 out of 5 saying this understanding was improved by our workshop. Visit Our Impact for the current data about our school services.

Our workshops are designed for S1 to S6 learners. We also offer a workshop for learners with ASN who are accommodated outwith the mainstream learning environment.

Planning Your Workshops

We require key staff – including those facilitating the sessions, pastoral care, and any other staff identified by the school – to have completed at least Stage 1 of the national CPD prior to the delivery of learner workshops. Our experience shows that workshops are most impactful when supported by staff engagement with professional learning.

For schools at the beginning of their LGBT Inclusive Education journey, we recommend starting with our assemblies.

Where schools choose to engage with both assemblies and workshops, these are most effective when spaced appropriately across the school year to allow time for learners to reflect and develop their understanding. We typically recommend a minimum interval of three months between assemblies and workshops. However, both services can be booked in advance to secure preferred delivery dates.

Understanding Prejudice

This workshop leads learners through an investigation of prejudice. It focuses on homophobia, biphobia and transphobia, but demonstrates that prejudice can affect many other groups of people.

It begins with an overview, before focusing on real examples of prejudice, including the speaker’s personal story. The workshop examines prejudice on both an individual and societal level.

The workshop contains interactive activities and creates opportunities for discussion between learners. Understanding Prejudice encourages empathy, critical thinking and an understanding of the lived experience of LGBT people.

This workshop is recommended for schools that have already engaged with LGBT Inclusive Education, so that school staff are prepared to further build upon this topic.

Duration: 50 minutes (1 Period)
Numbers: Max 33 per session
Location: Delivered in-person, in a classroom.

Learners will require access to the internet on phones or tablets during or following the session to collect evaluative data. This evaluative data is provided to the school afterwards.

A school staff member is required to be present for the duration of the session.

Understanding Prejudice: ASN

This workshop is designed specifically for learners with additional support needs who are accommodated outwith the mainstream learning environment. To ensure we get this right for learners, we adapt our standard session to their needs. To allow us to do so, we require a conversation between a school staff member and one of our EducationOfficers. Please find details of this on our booking form.

Our standard session leads learners through an investigation of prejudice. It focuses on homophobia, biphobia and transphobia, but demonstrates that prejudice can affect many other groups.

For our ASN version of this workshop, we will adapt the content in line with the needs of learners. Typically this would mean more focus on understanding of basic terms around LGBT people and what we mean by words such as ‘prejudice’ and ‘discrimination’. We lead discussions with young people, allowing them space to ask questions and engage with the content at their own pace.

Understanding Prejudice: ASN focuses on understanding and empathy, building knowledge at an accessible level about respectfully interacting with others, including those who are LGBT.

Duration: Typically 50 minutes (1 Period), but flexible depending on needs
Numbers: One class per session
Location: Delivered in-person, in a classroom

The workshop includes a short follow-up activity to be completed in class after the session. Learners will require access to the internet to complete this. Data from this activity is provided to the school afterwards.

School staff members are required to be present for the duration of the session.

Challenging Homophobia in Football

This workshop leads young people through an exploration of homophobic language and prejudice, specifically within the context of football.

It details real-life experiences of football fans and players within Scotland, including content from Zander Murray, the first Scottish senior male footballer to publicly come out.

Challenging Homophobia in Football creates opportunities for discussion and allows learners to ask questions to develop their understanding of lived experiences. The workshop encourages empathy, develops confidence in challenging homophobia, and reiterates key messages around inclusion and anti-discrimination.

This workshop is designed to be delivered in school football academies, school football teams, and similar sporting contexts.

Duration: 50 minutes (1 Period)
Numbers: Max 33 per session (in schools)
Location: Delivered in-person, in a classroom

Booking FAQs

The following FAQs provide guidance on booking our services and what to expect when arranging a visit.

When can you deliver services?
  • Assemblies and workshops: From 10am onwards, Tuesday to Thursday. Monday and Friday availability may be possible where necessary.
  • CPD and ITE inputs: Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 6pm. Twilight sessions and in-service days can be accommodated.

Please plan sessions in line with your setting’s timetable, including breaks and lunchtimes. As schedules vary and we do not have access to individual timetables, please provide specific requested times when booking.

Where do you deliver services?

We are proud to offer services across the whole of Scotland.

As we are based in Glasgow, we aim to maximise efficiency when travelling beyond the Central Belt by delivering multiple services within each school and/or working with several schools during the same visit.

We encourage you to consider this when booking and to liaise with nearby schools who may also benefit from our services. Where appropriate, we may arrange a call to discuss logistics in further detail.

Does this cost money?

No, all of our services are delivered free of charge.

 

Do you offer online delivery?

We deliver our services in person, with the exception of ITE inputs. Feedback has shown that online delivery is less impactful, as our sessions are designed to be interactive and are most effective in a face-to-face environment. While we recommend in-person delivery for ITE sessions, an online option is available where necessary.

Do school staff need to be present for the inputs?

A member of school staff must be present at all times during learner assemblies and workshops. Our team should not be left alone with, or expected to take sole responsibility for, learners at any point. If this requirement cannot be met, sessions will not be delivered. Please ensure all relevant staff are aware of this before our visit.

Additionally, our experience shows that workshops are most effective when supported by the class teacher or the member of staff who would usually be responsible for that group. This enables ongoing discussion and follow-up support for learners after the session.

How long are the inputs?
  • Primary workshops: One hour
  • Secondary assemblies and workshops: 50 minutes
  • CPD and ITE: Two hours

Session times cannot be adjusted and will run for the full allocated duration. Workshops cannot be split into multiple parts.

Do school staff need to be present for the inputs?

A member of school staff must be present at all times during learner assemblies and workshops. Our team should not be left alone with, or expected to take sole responsibility for, learners at any point. If this requirement cannot be met, sessions will not be delivered. Please ensure all relevant staff are aware of this before our visit.

Additionally, our experience shows that workshops are most effective when supported by the class teacher or the member of staff who would usually be responsible for that group. This enables ongoing discussion and follow-up support for learners after the session.

How many people can attend each input?

The maximum numbers for each of our services are as follows:

  • CPD: No fixed limit, dependent on venue capacity. Larger sessions may be delivered by multiple Education Officers.
  • Learner Workshops: Maximum of 33 learners per workshop.
  • Secondary Assemblies: No fixed limit, dependent on hall capacity. Year groups may be combined; however, we ask that learners are grouped within similar age ranges (e.g. S1-S2, S3-S4, S5-S6).
  • ITE Inputs: No fixed limit, dependent on venue or online platform capacity.
How do I fill out the booking form?

There are specific instructions on the booking form, but please follow these guidelines as you book your services.

  • All bookings should be submitted by one member of staff, who will be the key contact for our visit.
  • Booking forms for learner workshops are completed in two parts. You will receive an email with a unique booking code to select your workshops.
  • Please plan sessions based on your school or university timetable, accounting for lunchtimes and breaks. As each setting has its own schedule that we do not have access to, please be specific with the exact times you would like to book.
  • Session times are unable to be adjusted and will fill the entire time allocation. Due to the nature of all workshops, these are unable to be split into two parts.
Can I book multiple sessions?

Yes, we encourage engaging with multiple sessions and services where possible. For the easiest booking experience, please follow these guidelines:

  • All bookings should be submitted by one member of staff, who will act as the key contact for our visit.
  • Multiple workshop bookings should be grouped into a single visit on the same date, where possible. For requests spanning multiple days, please indicate this on your booking form.
  • We can deliver a maximum of four secondary assemblies per day.
  • We can deliver a maximum of twelve primary or secondary workshops per day.
  • CPD inputs cannot be split across multiple sessions, as the full teaching staff cohort should attend together. Multiple schools may join a single session.
  • Separate ITE sessions for primary and secondary students can be delivered on the same day.

Do you offer sessions for learners with additional support needs?

Yes. For learners with additional support needs within mainstream settings, our services are designed to be accessible to all learners with appropriate support from the school. If there are steps we can take to accommodate the needs of your learners, please let us know when booking.

For secondary schools, we deliver a workshop specifically for learners with additional support needs who are accommodated outwith the mainstream learning environment. As we tailor these inputs to the needs of your learners, we require a call to discuss the session with one of our Education Officers.

How should I set up my classroom / hall?

AV requirements for all services:

  • A projector or display screen
  • HDMI or VGA connection for our laptops
  • Alternatively, access to a computer that our USB can be plugged into
  • We can also connect through Apple Play

Secondary assemblies: Microphones are preferable for large audiences, but not essential. If you are providing a microphone, please have this set up in advance. Halls will need access to AV equipment as specified above. Learners will need an electronic device with access to the internet – in most cases, this would be their phone.

Secondary workshops: Due to the size of most secondary schools, it is preferable for our Education Officers to remain in one location for all sessions. Where this is not possible, please factor in extra time for relocating and setting up between workshops when you make your booking, to avoid losing time from the workshops. Classrooms will need access to AV equipment. Learners will need an electronic device with access to the internet – in most cases, this would be their phone.

We provide all required materials for our services.
