10 Years of TIE: a Decade of Change

10 Years of TIE: a Decade of Change

We began our work in 2015 as a grassroots campaign, with the aim of addressing homophobic, biphobic, and transphobic bullying with an educational approach in Scotland’s schools.

Our campaign led to Scotland becoming the first country in the world to agree to integrate LGBT themes – including diverse families, anti-bullying, history, and rights – across the school curriculum.

To commemorate this milestone, we held an anniversary event on the 12th of July at StLuke’s in Glasgow, hosted by our patron Susie McCabe. Campaigners, educators, politicians, and trade union representatives were invited to celebrate and reflect on our progress and the continued importance of LGBT Inclusive Education.

The event was supported by Unite the Union, Unison, GMB, the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC), the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS), and the Fire Brigade Union’s LGBT+ section.

Speeches were delivered by the Chair of our Board, Rhiannon Spear; Nicola Sturgeon, who was First Minister when the Scottish Government accepted the recommendations of the LGBT Inclusive Education Working Group in 2018; and our Co-Founders and Directors, Jordan Daly and Liam Stevenson.

Each speaker highlighted the impact of our campaign over the past decade, our ongoing commitment to this work today, and the importance of continuing to support LGBT Inclusive Education in schools, as well as the significance of solidarity and allyship.

The 10 year anniversary was also the focus of an extended media feature by James McEnaney, Education Specialist for The Herald. The coverage includes interviews with our Co-Founders and Directors, our patron Susie McCabe, analysis of our campaign’s development, and reflections from key political, academic and LGBT voices. The full package is available to read via The Herald’s dedicated topic page: Time for Inclusive Education.

From our beginnings as a grassroots campaign, we are now a national charity with a dedicated staff team, including GTCS-registered teachers who create and deliver our school services and resources.

We work across schools and universities in Scotland, providing free services for teachers, student teachers and learners, including the national professional learning course for teachers and school staff on behalf of the Scottish Government. We continue to believe education is the most powerful tool we have to address prejudice and that the children of tomorrow must grow up without the prejudices of today.
