We deliver the two-stage national CPD to support teachers and schools to implement the national approach with confidence. The professional learning supports teachers across stages, subjects, and departments to include the LGBT Learning Themes within their curriculum.
Delivering LGBT Inclusive Education
The Scottish Government expects all teachers in Scotland to engage with the National Approach to LGBT Inclusive Education, as set out in national guidance.
National Guidance
Having completed the robust endorsement process, TIE has demonstrated that its programme is impactful, quality assured, extremely well evaluated and clearly informed by professional teaching standards.
Programmes of learning for educators that are endorsed by Education Scotland provide a strong articulation of the national model of professional learning. This means they include learning by enquiry and collaboration and provide learning which deepens knowledge and understanding to a degree that is likely to impact both on the educator, and their learners.
National CPD
We provide the free national ‘Delivering LGBT Inclusive Education’ CPD on behalf of the Scottish Government. It is important that school staff complete this professional learning even where they have previously undertaken LGBT awareness or equality training with other providers, as the national CPD is specifically designed to support the implementation of the Scottish Government’s Guidance on LGBT Inclusive Education.
Both Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the professional learning course have been formally endorsed by Education Scotland.
This CPD focuses on teaching and learning. It also addresses other common questions teachers may have about this area of work, covering both the principles and practice for effectively delivering LGBT Inclusive Education in your setting.

The CPD is divided into two stages. Stage 1 consists of an E-Learning module, which is available on the lgbteducation.scot platform. The Stage 2 Curriculum Development input is an in-person training that requires the attendance of all teaching staff. After completing both stages of the CPD, teachers will:
- know how to meet the national expectations for delivering LGBT Inclusive Education
- have access to a bank of practice examples and resources
- have started planning their own inclusive curriculum
- understand how LGBT Inclusive Education can be tailored to meet the needs of the unique school setting
Stage 1: E-Learning Module
Stage 1 of ‘Delivering LGBT Inclusive Education’ is available on the lgbteducation.scot platform. It consists of an E-Learning module which can be completed by teachers individually in approximately 60 to 90 minutes.
Stage 1 covers the National Framework for LGBT Inclusive Education in Scotland. It provides the principles behind this area of work, including its place within current educational policy and national guidance. It also:
- introduces the LGBT Inclusive Education Learning Themes
- covers Child Protection and Safeguarding
- advises where this work can sit within Scotland’s Curriculum
We have created a brief introduction to LGBT Inclusive Education in the form of a short PowerPoint presentation, which you may find helpful to introduce this professional learning to your staff cohort.
Stage 2: Curriculum Development Input
The Stage 2 Curriculum Development input is an in-person training that requires the attendance of all teaching staff. It takes two hours to complete. All staff attending Stage 2 should have completed the Stage 1 E-Learning module prior to the date of the Stage 2 input.
Stage 2 covers the practical elements of LGBT Inclusive Education, particularly teaching and learning. Teachers will work together to begin planning an approach to this work that meets the expectations set out in guidance and is tailored to their unique school setting. Stage 2 also covers:
- why LGBT Inclusive Education is important for learners
- scenarios and discussions to facilitate staff collaboration and whole-school planning
- examples of resources that can be useful in the classroom
- cross-curricular planning time to begin incorporating the LGBT Inclusive Education Learning Themes into the school’s curriculum

Supporting Resources
Implementation and Evaluation Toolkit
This Toolkit is a supplementary resource to support teachers. It serves as a guide to implementing LGBT Inclusive Education throughout the school setting, including how to collaborate with colleagues, how to engage with the CPD, and how to plan an LGBT inclusive curriculum that will benefit all learners. The Toolkit has been developed with Scottish teachers in line with the National Approach. Engaging with the Toolkit allows teachers and schools to be directly supported by us. Schools will progress through three distinct sections:
- Journey functions as a simple and accessible starting point to LGBT Inclusive Education
- Achievement is the stage in which schools build their LGBT inclusive curriculum and start to put it into practice
- Excellence is for schools that wish to go beyond the base expectations and showcase the best of what they can bring to the practice of LGBT Inclusive Education
Supporting resources and certification are provided for each section. Schools that have been certified at Achievement can feel confident that they are meeting the Scottish Government’s expectations for the implementation of LGBT Inclusive Education.

We produce ready-to-use curriculum materials to support the delivery of LGBT Inclusive Education, which can be easily adapted to meet the needs of learners. These exemplar resources demonstrate how LGBT themes can be meaningfully included across different curriculum and subject areas in line with the principles set out in national guidance.

We manage lgbteducation.scot, the national platform for LGBT Inclusive Education on behalf of the Scottish Government. It hosts all quality approved resources, the national ‘Delivering LGBT Inclusive Education’ CPD, the LGBT Inclusive Education Implementation and Evaluation Toolkit and all current national guidance for this policy area.
Booking FAQs
When can TIE deliver services?
CPD inputs can be delivered Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 6pm. We can carry out twilight sessions and are available on in-service days. Please plan sessions based on your school or university timetable, accounting for lunchtimes and breaks. As every institution has its own schedule, which we do not have access to, please be specific with the exact times you would like to book.
Where do TIE deliver services?
We are proud to offer services throughout the whole of Scotland. As we are based in Glasgow, we try to maximise efficiency on our trips outside of the Central Belt by delivering multiple services in each school and/or visiting multiple schools on each trip. Please consider this when booking. We encourage liaising with nearby schools that may also benefit from our services and can deliver joint sessions.
Does this cost money?
No, all of our services are delivered free of charge.
Do you offer online delivery?
We only deliver our services in person, with the exception of ITE inputs. Previous feedback has indicated that online delivery is not as impactful as our inputs are designed to be interactive and engaging in a manner that works best in a face-to-face environment.
How long is the input?
The CPD input is two hours. Session times are unable to be adjusted and will fill the entire time allocation. We are
unable to split workshops.
Do all staff need to attend the CPD?
The CPD input requires the attendance of all teaching staff within the school. It is the Scottish Government’s expectation that all teachers in Scotland will engage with the National Approach to LGBT Inclusive Education, including the national CPD. As this represents a whole school approach, we are unable to deliver the CPD to teaching staff in separate sessions. However, we can deliver the CPD to multiple schools at once, as long as all teaching staff from each of the participating schools are present.
Support Staff
We generally recommend that if you would like your support staff to attend, they do so for the first hour only. This section of the session is more presentation-based and will provide support staff with the context they will need for the course, and still allow them to receive certification. The second hour allows teaching staff to work together to begin building their LGBT-inclusive curriculum. We encourage sharing details of the work done by staff in this section of the professional learning and subsequent curriculum building with all other staff at a later time.
How do I fill out the booking form?
There are specific instructions on the booking form, but please follow these guidelines as you book your services:

How should I set up my classroom/hall?
AV requirements for all services:
a projector or display screen
a HDMI or VGA connection for our laptops
alternatively, access to a computer that our USB can be plugged into
we can also connect through Apple Play
Teachers should be sitting in groups of 6-8, preferably with a mixture of subject specialities, to facilitate collaborative working. Halls or classrooms will need access to AV equipment as specified above. Teachers will need an electronic device with access to the internet – in most cases, this would be their phone.
Do participants require any materials?
We provide all the materials required for all of our workshops. The only thing we require CPD participants is that they have an electronic device with access to the internet – in most cases, this would be their phone.
