This resource pack will support you to deliver lessons about Dean Atta’s poem, ‘I Come From’, which reflects on identity, heritage, family, and belonging. The poem provides opportunities for learners to consider the experiences of people of colour and LGBT people in the UK today.
Learners will examine a range of poetic features and techniques, considering how Atta uses them to explore his background and the influences that have shaped him. By the end of the lesson, they will have the knowledge and skills to create their own poem about who they are, where they come from, and the factors and influences that have shaped who they are.
‘I Come From’ by Dean Atta is taken from The Black Flamingo, illustrated by Anshika Khullar and published by Hachette Children’s Group in 2019. ISBN-13: 9781444954937. The poem is reproduced for educational, non-profit purposes. All copyright remains with the original rights holders.
